The Welfare Poets
11/17/2009 7:00 PM at Judson Memorial Church - Picture the Homeless 10th Anniversary Gala
55 Washington Park Square South, NY, New York 10012
Cost: $50 - $1000
Description
Picture the Homeless is a unique organization in that it was founded by homeless New Yorkers on the principle that in order to end homelessness, people who are homeless must become an organized, effective voice for systemic change. Picture the Homeless emphasizes the importance of our members functioning as agents for change in stark contrast to how homeless folks are traditionally viewed.
We provide resources enabling them to stand up for their rights and the rights of others while creating space for homeless people and their agenda within the broader social justice movement. Picture the Homeless encourages leadership from within and the majority of our board are homeless or formerly homeless New Yorkers.
Notes
Picture the Homeless will honor Brenda Stokely with The Lewis "Lou" Haggins Social Justice Warrior Award for her commitment to eliminating political, economic and social injustices and defending human rights, including the right to affordable and safe housing, universal health care, and workers rights.
There are a LIMITED number of $50.00 tickets available for students, community activists and students; please contact Lynn Lewis at Lynn@picturethehomeless.org for details.
