Born in Manitoba, raised in the Black Hills, and now based in St. Paul, Haley Bonar recorded her first album at 17. Now, eight years later, she’s breaking through with her fourth release, "Big Star." Haley accompanies herself on guitar or a subtly controlled Rhodes piano. "Bonar," says the All Music Guide, "delivers her minor-key tunes and elliptical lyrics in a haunting, delicate voice at times reminiscent of both Aimee Mann and Gillian Welch." As with Welch, there’s a classic country influence in her music that has helped her carve out economical and memorable images. The dreamy simplicity of her music is something like a Cormac McCarthy short story: the emotional impact and the deep truths emerge slowly but then won’t let you go. "For those intent on sniffing out Next Big Things," says the Minnesota Daily, "be well advised of Bonar." Ypsilanti’s Matt Jones has also been showing up well beyond regional radar lately. After lending his guitar skills to Misty Lyn & the Big Beautiful and other local groups, Matt has struck out on his own. He released an album, "The Black Path," which Doug Coombe of the Metro Times called "a beautifully produced and arranged folk-chamber pop record that shares a lot in common with Ann Arbor compatriots Chris Bathgate and Great Lakes Myth Society." Matt comes to The Ark just ahead of a tour that will take him through Pennsylvania, down the Atlantic seaboard, and back through Nashville, the mid-South, the central Midwest, and Chicago. Catch him while he’s still local -- it may not be long!
