The Ark

11/23/2009 8:00 PM at Blind Pilot
316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104
Cost: $13.50

Recently featured at Lollapalooza 2009 and the giant Sasquatch festival in Washington state, as well as on NPR’s "Morning Edition," Portland, Oregon’s Blind Pilot, in the words of the Onion (which plays it straight in its reviews), has "some of the same distinctly Pacific Northwest mellow of regional progenitors like Death Cab For Cutie and Elliott Smith --which is to say it’s wistful, slightly melancholy, and destined to soundtrack more than a few heartbreaks." Blind Pilot makes lovely, peaceful, Americana-flavored acoustic music whose sparseness masks a totally addictive quality that sneaks up on you and won’t let you go. Strongly recommended for anyone who enjoys the Shins, the Avett Brothers, or Hem, or just enjoys a beautifully crafted sound that makes perfect sense from the first few notes. Opening the show is Portland, Oregon–based songwriter Laura Veirs. Jim James of My Morning Jacket calls her "the queen bee" and says, "my ear is her hive; she nests and makes honey in the hairs of my cochlea."
