The Asylum Street Spankers took their name from an old definition of the word "spanker" as a vigorous guitar player. This Austin-based all-acoustic group uses classic blues, ragtime, and country music as the point of departure for a journey into subversive humor and sheer lunacy. Imagine that Spike Jones and Frank Zappa got together and each had a bit too much to drink (or worse), and you have the Asylum Street Spankers: vaudeville for an age of insanity, and a live act that’s just not to be missed. The Asylum Street Spankers can be difficult to describe, but the Tampa Weekly Planet made a valiant effort: "The decade-old band is a roots-rock riddle, nestled in a satirical Vaudeville enigma, packaged in an old-timey radio-show puzzle and slathered with hippie-fied mystery sauce." The Spankers have just delighted their international underground following with a new release, "God’s Favorite Album."
