The Ark

12/11/2009 8:00 PM at SOLD OUT - Over the Rhine
316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104
Cost: $20

Over the Rhine is the Cincinnati duo of Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. Their ethereal sounds--dreamy, sweeping, highly literate and melancholy--have drawn comparisons to the likes of Cowboy Junkies. Says Leslie Benson of the Dayton City Paper: "The music of Cincinnati-based folk/roots band Over the Rhine seeps into you with a rich hunger--each note a separate, glimmering cloud-diamond." Someone once described OTR"s music as a mash-up of spirituality, whimsy and sensuality ("thank you, thank you, thank you," they say), and around the holidays the spiritual side is pushed a bit farther forward. It may be that they do the best and most compassionate holiday-time show around. Opening the evening is New York songwriter Lucy Wainwright Roche. As the daughter of Loudon Wainwright and Suzzy Roche she has some great songwriting genes, and the New York Times says she combines the best qualities of her parents (the extreme straightforwardness may come from her dad). But she’s rapidly finding a voice of her own, not one that takes after either parent, and she recently sold out New York’s top roots-music venue, Joe’s Pub.
