316 S. Main St., Ann Arbor, Michigan 48104
Cost: $15
The Ann Arbor band Orpheum Bell came together as its members were combing through country and folk rhythms, instrumental waltzes, and Gypsy melodies. The mixture they came up with and shaped into original songs is unique. The band’s quiet sound is focused on the intoxicating vocals of Merrill Hodnefeld, accordion, guitar, and double bass, with additional texture and luster spreading from violins (including the addictively weird Stroh violin), clarinet, percussion, and an autoharp. With more than a bit of Tom Waits’s instinct for turning half-forgotten musical styles into something absolutely modern and gripping, Orpheum Bell has created something new and different in Michigan music--and American music. This show celebrates the release of Orpheum Bell’s intricately worked out and long-awaited second CD, "Pearls."
