Presenting the indigenous music of Persia and Central Asia is Robayat, formed in 1989 by Iranian native Maryam Yusefzadeh, Tim O’Keefe, and former member Tim Sparks. Yusefzadeh received her early training at the Tehran School of Music under music masters Mohamad Esmaili and Esmail Tehrani, and ultimately migrated to MN to receive her BFA at the University of MN. Rounding out the Robayat sound is David Stenshoel, whose eclectic violin sounds can be heard with great bands like Boiled in Lead, Honeysuckle Rose, SunPlug’d and Café Accordion Orchestra. Robayat performs Persian music, with roots extending as far back as 500 B.C.. As critic Jim Meyer of the Minneapolis Star Tribune wrote, “Though Robayat is serious about this music, the players approach it with confidence and a sense of fun.”
