Founded in 1854 as Ashmun Institute, Lincoln University of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania prides itself on being "the first institution anywhere in the world to provide a higher education in the arts and sciences for male youth of African descent." In 1866, this Historically Black College was renamed in honor of President Abraham Lincoln.
