Calling Out Of Context is a nine-day festival of experimental music and sound. This unique event will feature a host of musicians and artists in a series of performances, gigs and workshops, revealing the vitality of the sonic avant-garde. Calling Out Of Context includes over forty performers and groups, including both emerging figures and well-known names. Many of the participants cross the boundaries between different musical traditions, and the festival – which takes its title from a song by the American underground musician Arthur Russell – draws on the crossover ethos of New York’s downtown music scene of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Calling Out Of Context will fill the ICA with sound: the ICA’s theatre will host performances, workshops and discussions; while one gallery is being used as a performance space, and the other as a recording studio. The programme includes performances by The Red Krayola, Gravetemple, Aaron Dilloway, Seb Rochford, Steve Noble, James Beckett and Lucky Dragons, as well as new sound works by Jan St Werner and Nina Canell / Robin Watkins. The season concludes with a weekend of events dedicated to the British avant-garde musician and activist Cornelius Cardew, featuring contributions from John Tilbury, Frederic Rzewski and Ultra Red (and coinciding with an exhibition on Cardew’s work at The Drawing Room in East London). Like Cardew, all of the participants in Calling Out Of Context push at the boundaries of sound, but importantly they also use it to inspire ideas and actions. The full programme will be announced in October on the ICA website, when tickets will go on sale. As part of this event, GRAVID HANDS will be curating the gallery recording sessions on the opening day of the festival.
