Imagine New Orleans-style second line and gypsy swing jazz laced with old school folk protest ballads, but compacted into a viral so you can short it. The music Stephanie Nilles creates, re-creates, and interprets, has been classified as vocalese, jazz/blues, anti-pop, and just plain sub-corporate folk, with influences ranging from Charles Mingus to The Brothers Quay. She has been described as "Ella Fitzgerald on speed beating the shit out of Regina Spektor," "Tom Waits on helium," and "Sociopolitical commentary channeling Billie Holiday." In a day in age saturated with a frantic music industry that knows nothing about music itself, a so-called indie music community comprised of self-involved if not self-absorbed critics and songwriters who know nothing of independence or the aesthetic and self-discipline required of music-making, an artistic marketing campaign that focuses more and more on digital production and distribution and less and less on humanity, and an audience that is being goaded and pandered-to as if comprising the dwindling attention span of a 4-year-old, Stephanie prefers simply to sound like your parents’ (or perhaps grandparents’) records.
