The term “Akousmatikoi” was used by Pythagoras for uninitiated students who, in an effort to relieve them of visual distractions, were made to sit behind a screen while the master lectured. In this context, the screen becomes a barrier between performer and audience, allowing the audience to focus solely on the content of the lecture. In the 20th century, Pierre Schaeffer adapted the term “Acousmatique” to musique concrete philosophy by “referring to a sound that one hears without seeing the causes behind it”. With ((audience)), we are installing a dynamic set of front and back projection screens in an office building downtown for a performance on October 28th. For this performance, we are looking for artists and/or musicians to re-imagine the “Acousmatic” and emphasize the screen as a window or barrier which translates auditory experience into direct, time based visual impressions. How can the modern banality of the screen be returned its material, biological (magical?) potency? We encourage performers to utilize sound, video, film/cinema, light and space to create an audio/visual performance that obscures and/or explains the source of sound.
