The New Wine take to the stage of the 229 for their first UK date since Brighton’s Great Escape Festival. Making waves at home and abroad, this synth laden, disco-funk influenced band bring with them their beautifully crafted pop sensibilities to the capital.
Consisting of four young men aged 19 to 21, The New Wine hail from Bergen, Norway where they create their delicious and accessible brand of forward thinking indie tracks. They ply danceable synth-pop complete with light guitar riffs, funky bass and steady beats wrapped around tightly written structures. With influences ranging from The Shins, local heroes The Kings Of Convenience and stretching as far as the more electronic-punk sound of LCD Soundsystem and cosmic disco aesthetics of Lindstrom, the band cherry pick the right elements from this diverse selection of sounds, molding them into the distinctly eclectic and fresh ‘New Wine’ sound.
In a rare opportunity to see the band this side of the North Sea, it’s during their well-practiced performances that he band shine brightest. After all, it was there live debut with The Whitest Boy Alive that gained them a reputation - playing in heavy rotation across Europe ever since has gained the band many fans and recognition from critics alike, including last years packed out Lock Tavern performance. Now, armed with a fresh set of tunes including newly penned single ‘Bridge’, and forthcoming single ‘I Had To Tell You’ the band offer us they’re unique sounding blend of indie-disco infused pop at 229.
Named after the Yamaha mini keyboard classic, the support comes from Portasound, a London based 3 piece with a fantastic ear for challenging production and original composition. Combining elements of Metronomy, LOTP and Wax Stag, they create engaging instrumentals that merge the electro/indie continuum perfectly, sporting tight executions of guitar, keys and even whistling! Championed by BBC Radio 1’s Huw Stephens and hailed for turning more then a few heads at Huw’s recent SWN Festival in Cardiff, Portasound’s quirky sensibilities and brave craftsmanship are perfectly represented during their frantic sets. This is one gig that shouldn’t be missed.
