11/8/2009 8:00 PM at A Benefit For Cam Wagner @ The Railway Club
579 Dunsumir Street, Vancouver, British Columbia
Cost: $20

On November 8, 2009, the Vancouver roots music community will be coming out in full force to help out one of their own, Cam Wagner. A stalwart of the roots/honky tonk scene for many years, Cam’s talent as song writer brought him to the forefront of the scene during it’s heyday in the early 90’s. Singing for seminal rockabilly/western swing band, the Five Star Hillbillies, Cam rocked the scene here and abroad for many years, even ending up at the world famous Hemsby Rockabilly weekender in England. Featuring a stellar array of Vancouver’s finest rockabilly musicians, this band was indeed a force to be reckoned with. Along with Cam, the line up was comprised of Ronnie Hayward on upright bass, Jimmie Roy on pedal steel, Steve Nikleva on guitar and Steve Taylor on drums. Bass-master extraordinaire, Pete Turland, also did a stint with the band. A new generation of rockabillies, who were perhaps unaware of this bands existence, have had the privilege of seeing Cam at various jams and on a reunion gig of the Five Star Hillbillies earlier this year. Recently, however Cam was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer. Cam has not let this stop him, and continues to work and play music. This has taken it’s toll, unfortunately. Chemotherapy is physically demanding and this has caused Cam to miss a lot of work, and being a contract worker in the movie industry as a foley walker, a lot of revenue as well. The various supplements and vitamins that are required are not covered by the government health plan and thereby incur even more expenses. Cam and his family are doing well during these difficult times, but would certainly benefit from a little support. This is why some members of the Vancouver rockabilly and roots community have come together and put on a benefit concert. The Five Star Hillbillies will be on hand with the original line up, including the man himself, Cam Wagner, on vocal duties. The Still Creek Brothers will be on next featuring their unique blend of rockabilly, western swing and honky-tonk. The LaBorie brothers, Tony and Ben, front the band, creating great harmonies and rockin’ sounds. Next up will, Vancouver grease masters, the Bughouse Five. A fixture on the scene for many years, these cats will really tear it up. Led by rockabilly powerhouse, Butch Murphy, the boys will really raise the all-too- low roof at the Railway Club. We would encourage all lovers of good music to come out and help out in this worthy endeavor. It promises to be a night of unparalleled rockabilly. It will be a blast from the past for all the older scenesters out there and, for the newer generation of ’billies, a rare glimpse of what Vancouver rockabilly was all about in it’s glory days. We would like to thank you in advance for your support, and are looking forward to seeing all our friends, old and new, on Sunday November 8. Serge Lotosky Vancouver, BC
