The Misfits are an American horror punk band formed in 1977 in New Jersey, originally led by Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only. They were pioneers of horror punk, as well as highly influential on heavy metal, and rock music in general. Though they ceased recording and performing in 1983, a new version of the band (led by Only but without Danzig) began operations in 1995.
The early Misfits were often melodic, featuring Danzig’s versatile singing, which had a style rooted in Italian tenors such as Mario Lanza and in 1950s doo-wop. Early Misfits songs tended to have catchy, sing-along choruses, initially backed by Danzig’s distorted keyboard accompaniments and later by willfully crude guitar-rock. The band began as a largely untrained ensemble. Musically, the band has also displayed some rockabilly influences . After several lineup changes and increasing international acclaim, Danzig disbanded the original Misfits in 1983.
The Misfits were resurrected by founding member Jerry Only returning stronger than ever with "AMERICAN PSYCHO", released in May of 1997. Only then took over lead vocals in addition to his bass duties, and recruited punk veterans Dez Cadena of Black Flag and Marky Ramon of the Ramones. After a successful tour, Ramone’s departure from the Misfits saw the return of classic era drummer ROBO to the lineup.
From neo-punk bands Green Day, Rancid, Blink 182 and Good Charlotte to metal acts Metallica, Pantera and Slayer to hard rockers such as Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Guns n Roses, and more recently My Chemical Romance, the Misfits have inspired many musicians and much of the music people are watching on TV and hearing on the radio today. The Misfts’ legacy is deep in modern music. And their shirts are everywhere! Greenhouse is proud to be bringing the Misfits back to Flagstaff!
