11/20/2009 7:30 PM at STAND UP CINEMA presents LA BELLE ET LA BETTE
Main Room, Upstairs,
Cost: £5/£4
Monthly, independent film club showing rarely seen classics, obscure documentaries, cult independents and overlooked modern gems. Relaxed and informal setting to see great films including some you probably won’t have seen before. Stand Up Cinema is a collaboration with Real Time Video who are also organising screenings of local filmmakers work before the main feature. If you would like to showcase your work contact info@real-time.org.uk. The films don’t have to be in their final form, and we are aiming to show up to 10 minutes of each film, it’s a great chance to gauge audience reaction. This month’s main feature is Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bette
Cocteau’s second feature set standards in fantasy which have yet to be surpassed. Few filmmakers even with the advantage or is that the hindrance, of CGI have equalled his lavish vision. Sequences such as those in the enchanted castle are pure magic and the mis en scene, mood and tone of the film, influenced by the paintings of Vermeer and Rembrant, have been an influence on fantasy filmmakers ever since. This is an unmissable chance to see one of the true classics of early cinema.
