Recent New York transplant Sam Mickens (presently of The Dead Science, past/present contributor to Xiu Xiu, Parenthetical Girls, Carla Bozulich’s Evangelista, Degenerate Art Ensemble, and more) will be unveiling and developing a program of new music over the course of a February residency at Brooklyn venue Zebulon. The setting could not be more appropriate for the music, which marries some threads of Mickens’ musical backgrounds in experimental jazz and art rock into a thorough re-imagining of soul music for the present age. In an era which finds many purveyors of overtly referential and derivative new/classic Soul music, Mickens’ promises to be utterly serious, genuine, and ecstatic in approach. Featuring an evolving roster of musicians over the course of the residency, including members of NY avant luminaries Extra Life, Zs, Little Women, and People, these evenings will prove to be burning, exhaustive throwdowns of emotional catharsis and musical fervor. Sam Mickens-Ecstatic Showband & Revue Appearing Live at Zebulon [258 Wythe Avenue] Thursday February 5th, 9pm Thursday February 19th, 9pm & Thursday February 26th, 9pm "A voice uncannily like Jennifer Charles with a Y chromosome, Sam Mickens croons with equal parts jazz and lounge singer with a slight hint of sexual ambiguity" -Stylus Magazine "This is the voice of a fallen god!" -Threeimaginarygirls.com "A voice that can dislodge the locked hips of even the most rigid indie rocker" -Portland Mercury
